Traveling With Sex Toys: Can You Bring A Vibrator Or Dildo On A Plane? (TSA Rules)

Last Updated on

So you are taking a trip and want to bring your little friend along for the ride.

Flying with sex toys is perfectly normal in the United States even for residents of Alabama who are forced to buy their toys out of state due to local laws.

There are some countries such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and India where possession of sex toys is against the law. So if you are flying internationally check local laws and values.

In this post, we’ll go through lots of examples of sex toys and examine if they can be taken with you when you fly.

TSA Sex Toys Rules

The Transportation Security Administration are those airport security officers that decide what can and can’t go on planes.

They don’t specifically mention adult sex toys on their website, but here is the answer that they frequently give on Twitter:

Adult toys are allowed in carry-on or checked bags. For awareness, if additional inspection is required at the checkpoint on the bag your item is in, you may ask for a private screening. Whips and floggers must be packed in checked bags.

Let’s now take a look at some specific toys in more detail.

Can you bring a vibrator in a carry on bag?

You can bring a vibrator in carry-on luggage. Notice I say “a” vibrator and not “your” vibrator. It’s policy not to imply ownership.

You can pack a vibrator in carry-on luggage or in checked luggage. Make sure it’s turned off so any vibrating does not attract attention! Remove batteries from toys if there is any chance of accidental activation.

Some people prefer packing sex toys in checked luggage since there is less chance they’ll need to speak to a TSA officer about the contents of their suitcase.

Frankly, the TSA is not interested in your vibrator. The TSA is searching for dangerous items that could pose a threat to the security of the flight.

A vibrator is no more interesting to them than an electric toothbrush. They see vibrators all the time on the x-ray screens and don’t blink an eyelid.

Regardless of where you pack a vibrator, it’s best to put it in a clear plastic bag. This means that in the event of a case inspection it can easily be identified and the bag does not even need to be opened.

On the other hand personal belongings can sometimes go missing from checked luggage as happened to Meredith when she lost her rabbit vibrator:

Vibrators are not cheap and you are less likely to lose it if you pack it in your carry on bag.

Can You Bring A Dildo On A Plane?

Dildos are even more straightforward since there are no batteries involved.

You can bring a dildo of any size on a plane. The Duchess asked the TSA directly about packing dildos in carry-on luggage:

And the TSA replied that dildos are allowed in carry-on bags.

The TSA are only looking for dangerous items. Most silicone dildos or small glass dildos are harmless.

But there is a general rule that heavy items that can be used as a bludgeon are not permitted. I asked the TSA if I could bring a heavy glass dildo and this is what they said:

So a very large, heavy, glass dildo could be denied boarding if it was deemed to be dangerous.

You can’t bring a weapon that you could knock someone out with and get away with it just because you call it a dildo. The TSA officer at the security checkpoint always has the final say on what is permitted on the plane.

Panda asked the TSA about her collection of adult sex toys and fetish bondage gear:

The TSA replied that while in general adult toys are allowed in carry-on or checked bags whips, paddles, and floggers must go in checked bags.

It’s the same principle, adult toys are fine but weapons are not permitted in the cabin.

Can You Bring Handcuffs On A Plane?

Handcuffs are allowed to be packed in carry-on luggage or checked luggage.

Lady B wanted to know if she could bring her ball gag in her carry on.

The TSA gave her the green light for the ball gag, handcuffs and lubricant in her carry on, but warned her that whips and chains should be packed in a checked bag.

It’s worth noting that lube is considered a liquid and is subject to the TSA liquids rule. It needs to be in bottles under 3.4 oz (100 ml) and packed inside your quart size bag alongside your other toiletries.

Tinner asked about packing handcuffs in checked baggage:

So feel free to pack your play handcuffs or real handcuffs wherever you prefer.

Can You Bring A Butt Plug On A Plane?

Kiki asked the TSA about bringing “a small metal sex toy” on her carry-on for a domestic flight:

And the butt plug was given a pass to be taken in hand luggage.

It goes without saying that small metal sex toys should be packed in the suitcase when going through the checkpoint and not worn anywhere on your person.

The Verdict

Traveling with sex toys is pretty straightforward. You can pack dildos and vibrators in carry-on bags or checked luggage.

Lube is a liquid and needs to be in a small 3.4 oz bottle with other toiletries.

The line between toys and weapons can be a little blurry. Any sex toy that is used to strike or bludgeon must be packed in checked baggage and is prohibited from carry-on bags.

Enjoy your vacation and remember to pack spare batteries!
