How Many Phones Can You Bring On A Plane? Can You Take Two?

Last Updated on May 9, 2021

A lot of people have two cell phones, one for work and one for personal use.

You might be traveling internationally and have the chance to buy a phone at a cheaper price.

But how many phones are you allowed to bring on a plane?

TSA & Multiple Cell Phones On Domestic Flights

The Transportation Security Administration run the airport security checkpoint in the United States.

I checked their website to see if they say anything about taking more than one cell phone.

The TSA website doesn’t mention any limits to the number of cell phones that you can pack. If there was a limit you would expect them to let you know.

Just to be sure, I checked Twitter to see if the question had been answered already.

Alvaro asked “is there a limit on how many cell phones I can take in my carry-on bag?”.

The TSA doesn’t limit the number of phones in carry-on or checked bags, but you should check with your airline because they may have limits on the number of personal electronic devices you can board with.

Airline Policies On Multiple Cell Phones

I had a look at the policies of some of the main airlines in the United States.

American Airlines appear to only allow 2 cell phones or personal use in hand luggage. Spare cell phone batteries can only be packed in carry-on luggage.

And Delta allow passengers to bring up to 15 personal electronic devices.

Airlines can set limits on the number of phones allowed but it is the TSA that screens your bag and as we’ve seen already they won’t mind you carrying a few mobile phones in your hand baggage.

Bringing Multiple Phones On International Flights

If you are taking an international flight you might need to consider the customs rules of your destination country.

Some countries only allow travelers to carry one cell phone for personal use and would consider carrying multiple cell phones to be importing goods. You’d then need to pay import tax.

The Bottom Line

There is no limit to the number of cell phones you can bring on domestic flights in your carry-on luggage or checked luggage.

For international flights, you should check the customs rules for importing cell phones to your destination country.
