Can You Take Gum On A Plane?

Last Updated on September 16, 2021

I like to chew gum sometimes to freshen up my breath and to pass the time.

But can you take gum on a flight and should you chew gum on a plane?

Let’s take a look at the rules.

TSA Gum Rules

The Transportation Security Administration has the following entry about gum on their official website:

You can bring gum on a plane in your carry-on bag or maybe even in your pocket…

This Twitter user joked about bringing gum through airport security:

The TSA agents won’t stop you from taking gum through the security checkpoint even if they discover some in your pocket.

But it’s probably best to take any gum out of your pocket and pack it in your carry-on bags just for your own convenience.

You can also pack gum in checked luggage too without restriction.

As always the final decision rests with the TSA agent on the ground, but they have no reason to stop you bringing gum on your flight.

Still Got Questions?

You can ping a message to the TSA on Twitter and they’ll get back to you with an answer.

Don checked in with the TSA about packing him gum:

This one is kinda funny…

Adrienne wanted to bring an enormous wad of used gum with her in her carry-on luggage that she uses during her public speaking work.

If she can bring a big wad of prechewed gum you’ll be fine with your little pack!

Be Respectful!

If you are going to bring gum on a plane then make sure you dispose of it correctly and respect future passengers.

Someone left chewing gum on the plane seat and Ross’s daughter got it all stuck to her new clothes. Not cool.

Maria was disgusted to find someone left behind gum on her American Airlines flight.

She was even more unhappy that the flight attendant refused to do anything about it!

So by all means, bring gum on the plane but remember to be a decent human being.

Chewing Gum On The Plane Might Help Your Ears

Some people like Stephanie advise chewing gum on the plane to help your ears pop.

She’s right, chewing gum helps with the air pressure in your ears, but I prefer the Valsalva maneuver.

Where Is It Illegal To Chew Gum?

Keep in mind that if you are headed to Singapore then it’s illegal to chew gum there unless it’s nicotine gum.

So if you are headed to Singapore the TSA won’t stop you from bringing it on the plane but you are not really supposed to import it into the country!

The Bottom Line

You can bring a pack of gum on a plane in either carry-on luggage or checked luggage.

There are no special instructions or limits.

Just try not to annoy the folks sitting next to you if you make a lot of noise when you chew!
