Can You Bring Incense On A Plane?

TSA Incense Rules

The Transportation Security Administration searches baggage at the airport security checkpoint in the United States for dangerous items.

They don’t specifically mention incense on their website so I checked on Twitter to see if their social media team had clarified the rules about flying with incense.

Glauco had already asked the question:

Solid Incense

You can bring solid dry incense sticks or cones on a plane in hand luggage without quantity restriction.

You can also bring certain lighters too but of course you are not permitted to burn incense on a plane due to the fire risk.

And the TSA informed Carole that she could pack incense sticks and cones in checked luggage:

Keep in mind that cigarette lighters cannot be packed in your checked bag unless they are in a DOT approved travel bag.

But the TSA rules about traveling with incense depends whether it is a solid, powder, or liquid form.

Liquid Incense

All liquids are restricted by the TSA when packed in carry-on luggage and liquid incense is no exception.

Liquid incense would need to be in containers smaller than 3.4 oz and packed in your one quart size bag.

You can pack larger containers of liquid incense in your checked luggage.

Incense Powders

The TSA has guidance about bringing any powders through airport security and if you are flying with powdered incense this guidance would apply.

You can bring powdered incense on a plane in hand luggage but any containers larger than 12 ounces should be removed from your carry-on bag and placed in a bin for X-ray screening at the checkpoint.

For your convenience your might want to pack any larger quantities of incense powders in checked luggage so you don’t need to do this.
